Based in Halifax, Canada, Korean-born artist Kye Yeon Son (b. 1957) is considered one of Canada’s premier metalsmiths. Son creates elegant forms reflecting the artist’s sensitivity to nature and mastery of her medium. Her delicate works often reference the shifting rhythms of life - of growth, death, and renewal - resonating with a powerful, yet subtle emotional intensity.

Kye Yeon Son was born in South Korea and earned her BFA at Seoul National University. Son came to the USA to attend Indiana University where she earned her MFA in Silversmithing and Jewelry Design. Son has since created an elegant and imposing body of work, her vessels and “wishing stones” creating a reassuring aura of serenity and nostalgia.

In 2011 Son was recipient of the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award, a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. She has exhibited her works in numerous solo shows and group exhibitions in public and commercial galleries across Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and Korea. In addition, her work has also won numerous awards from organizations including the Canada Council for the Arts, the Metal Arts Guild, and NICHE. She is currently a professor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where she has contributed to the development of their jewelry design and metalsmithing program. She has also been a member of the Royal Academy of Arts since 2000.
