Duckyong Kim reinterprets contemporary painting through traditional Korean techniques, working directly on reclaimed wooden panels such as doors and furniture. He carves, sands, and paints the wood using dancheong methods, while also incorporating mother-of-pearl, wood ash, and charcoal to explore texture, light, memory, and the cycles of nature. Inspired by Korean aesthetics and the philosophy of najeonchilgi, Kim views “wood itself” as paper, allowing its grain, cracks, and imperfections to become part of the work. His practice moves between figuration and abstraction, from early explorations of Korean identity and reclaimed wood to Moon Jar and Dayflower series, symbolic studies of sea and interiority, the Cycle of Life series, and recent Cosmic Landscapes. Across these stages, Kim connects material, memory, time, and the natural world, translating Korean artistic and philosophical traditions into a contemporary visual language.
